The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has released essential travel safety tips for Prospective Corps Members (PCMs) embarking on journeys to their respective NYSC camps for the orientation exercise. With the distribution of call-up letters, thousands of young graduates will traverse the country, making safety a top priority.
To ensure a smooth and secure trip, PCMs must adhere to the following NYSC travel safety guidelines:
1. Plan Your Journey Ahead
Every successful trip begins with proper preparation. Before departure, double-check that you have all necessary registration documents (call-up letter, school credentials, ID cards, etc.). Forgetting crucial paperwork may force you to return home, exposing you to unnecessary risks on the road.
2. Research Your Destination
Familiarize yourself with your camp location, routes, and nearby transport hubs. Knowing key landmarks and safe transit points can prevent confusion and reduce vulnerability.
3. Use Only Approved Motor Parks
Avoid boarding vehicles by the roadside, no matter how cheap the fare seems. Unregistered transport is a common trap for armed robbers, kidnappers, and ritualists. Always board buses from recognized parks for safety.
4. Arrive Before Nightfall
Plan your journey to arrive at your destination by 6:00 PM at the latest. If delays occur, consider breaking the trip and continuing the next day. Night travel increases exposure to dangers.
5. Avoid Sensitive Discussions
Steer clear of heated debates on politics, religion, or ethnicity. Unintentional remarks may provoke conflicts—keep opinions private to stay safe.
6. Stay Alert and Discreet
Be polite but cautious with strangers. Avoid loud phone conversations that may reveal personal details, making you a target for criminals.
7. Limit Alcohol Consumption
Alcohol impairs judgment—stay sober to remain vigilant throughout your trip.
8. Travel Light
Carry only essentials to avoid unnecessary baggage. Overpacking slows you down and makes you more susceptible to theft.
9. Dress Moderately
Avoid flashy or overly shabby outfits. Dressing normally helps you blend in and reduces unwanted attention.
10. Secure Your Belongings
Keep important documents (certificates, passports, etc.) close. Use front pockets for valuables instead of back pockets, which are easy targets for pickpockets.
11. Share Your Itinerary
Update family and trusted friends on your travel plans, including departure times, routes, and expected arrival.
By following these NYSC travel safety tips, PCMs can minimize risks and ensure a secure journey to camp.
We wish all Prospective Corps Members safe travels as they answer the call to serve the nation!
