WAEC, NECO Exams to Go CBT 2026

WAEC

Introduction

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that WAEC and NECO exams will transition to Computer-Based Testing (CBT) starting from 2026. This major shift begins with objective questions in November 2025, followed by a full transition—including essay papers—by May–June 2026.

1. What CBT Means for WAEC and NECO

Computer-Based Testing (CBT) means students will take their exams on a computer instead of using pen and paper. This system is already used by JAMB and has significantly reduced exam malpractice.

Key Benefits of CBT for WAEC and NECO:

  • Reduces cheating and exam fraud
  • Improves accuracy in grading
  • Aligns with JAMB’s CBT standards
  • Enhances exam security

Students must now develop basic computer skills to adapt to this new format.

2. When Will the Changes Begin?

The transition to CBT will happen in two phases:

  • November 2025: Objective questions (multiple-choice) will switch to CBT.
  • May–June 2026: All exam components, including essay questions, will be fully computer-based.

If you’re taking WAEC or NECO in 2026 or beyond, start practicing computer-based tests now to prepare.

3. Why This Shift Matters for Students

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, confirmed that this change follows a review of Nigeria’s exam system. Many “miracle centers” (fraudulent exam hubs) allow cheating, and CBT will help eliminate them.

What Students Should Expect:

  • More secure and credible exams
  • Faster and more accurate results
  • Need for basic computer literacy
  • Potential challenges for students without computer access

If you’re in senior secondary school, you may be among the first students to take WAEC/NECO via CBT.
